Semanggoh Orangutans nature reserve, BORNEO

Dances with Orangutans

P1090880

Well today was an early start (7.45)because we had made plans to go into the jungle to see the orangutangs at a rehab centre ( not like Amy Winehouse) These orangutangs are protected because hunters want to chop of their paws and sell them for goodness knows what reason. anyway , we were lucky because we saw about ten of them showing off and chucking branches down .I had no idea they lived in nests and were nomadic. They apparently bite BUT the crowd we saw didn`t look too nasty ,,,we were with a guide and a small group from the hostel. The trees and flowers are amazing ..we saw one called a pitcher plant that eats bugs and is shaped like a goblet. We met some really nice people all staying in this hostel ... it`s a great atmosphere and very clean -Pat and I have upped the average age a bit !
We then went into the main town which is more a rabbit warren of really small shops full of everything but the kitchen sink.Pat has already signed himself up for a cookery class but Lord knows where he`s going to get the ingredients from when we get back to Chambery!!
After that we were so hot we went to a lovely Lebanese cafe and had a pineapple, orange and cucumber drink ..all natural  .Talk about rehab for orangutangs - we are the same as we can`t have a drink because of the malaria tablets ..so we are SO healthy

We then trecked off to the old colonial court house ...looks like something out of a film starring Gregory Peck.
That`s about it -it`s 7pm and I`m HUNGRY but it`s raining so we`ll have to wait. The tropical rain in very impressive but doesn`t last long and cools the place down.

Hope all is well and I`ll keep writing as long as I have  access ...or have eloped with an orangutan.
